Sensitivity of Eurasian Rear-Edge Birch Populations to Regional Climate and Local Hydrological Conditions

چکیده
South rear-edge populations of widely distributed temperate and boreal tree species such as birches (Betula pubescens Betula pendula) are considered particularly vulnerable to climate warming, at the same time, they constitute genetic reservoirs drought-adapted ecotypes. Here, we compared radial growth patterns responses climate, river, or reservoir flows a drought index (southernmost) (Toledo Mountains, central-southern Spain) with located in northern Spain B. pendula. Then, performed comparative analysis across Europe pendula populations. The main climatic constraint birch was high summer water deficit, although effect local hydrological conditions important We found declining trends stands dating from early 21st century, related decreasing availability increasing aridity. Our results also suggested distinct climate-growth associations that show how further south warmer locations were more sensitive stress. Drought-induced decline can be exacerbated by human land uses, leading reduced river inflow, thus endangering their southern distribution limit. Protection threatened requires adequate management resources.

Sensitivity of Amazon Regional Climate to Deforestation
It is known that the Amazon region plays an important role in the global energy, hydrological cycle and carbon balance. This region has been suffering from the course of the past 40 years intense land use and land cover changes. With this in mind, this study has examined possible associations between change in spatial and temporal rainfall variability and land cover change in the Amazon, using ...
متن کاملConserving biodiversity under climate change: the rear edge matters.
Modern climate change is producing poleward range shifts of numerous taxa, communities and ecosystems worldwide. The response of species to changing environments is likely to be determined largely by population responses at range margins. In contrast to the expanding edge, the low-latitude limit (rear edge) of species ranges remains understudied, and the critical importance of rear edge populat...
متن کاملArctic climate sensitivity to local black carbon
[1] Recent attention has focused on the impact of black carbon (BC) on Arctic climate. Here, idealized equilibrium climate experiments are conducted to explore the dependence of Arctic temperature change on the altitude and season of local BC forcing. BC residing in the lowest atmospheric layer produces very strong Arctic warming per unit mass and forcing [2.8 ̇ 0.5 K (W m–2)–1] because of low c...
متن کاملCentral and rear-edge populations can be equally vulnerable to warming
Rear (warm) edge populations are often considered more susceptible to warming than central (cool) populations because of the warmer ambient temperatures they experience, but this overlooks the potential for local variation in thermal tolerances. Here we provide conceptual models illustrating how sensitivity to warming is affected throughout a species' geographical range for locally adapted and ...
متن کاملLocal conditions for edge-coloring
In this note, we investigate three versions of the overfull property for graphs and their relation to the edge-coloring problem. Each of these properties implies that the graph cannot be edge-colored with colors, where is the maximum degree. The three versions are not equivalent for general graphs. However, we show that some equivalences hold for the classes of indiierence graphs, split graphs,...
